The latest quarterly snapshot by the Mortgage Bankers Association on Friday broke records for late payments, homes entering the foreclosure process and for the inventory of loans in foreclosure.

The percentage of loans at least 30 days past due or in foreclosure was up from 8.8% in the January-March quarter, and up from 6.5% a year earlier.

In one bit of positive news, delinquencies on subprime adjustable-rate loans dipped 1 percentage point from the first quarter to 21%.

The seasonally adjusted foreclosure starts rate, the percentage of loans that entered the foreclosure process during the April-June quarter, was 1.19%, up from 0.99% in the first three months of 2008 and 0.65% in the second quarter of 2007.

MINNEAPOLIS (JTA)—Sarah Palin, the Alaska governor who was tapped last week by Sen. John McCain to be his vice-presidential running mate, met for 45 minutes Tuesday in the Minneapolis area with several leaders of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee.

Also in attendance at the AIPAC meeting was U.S. Sen. Joseph Lieberman (I-Conn.), the McCain campaign’s most prominent Jewish backer.

McCain campaign spokesman Michael Goldfarb said Palin spoke about “the relationship between Israel and American national security, and the threats to Israel from Iran and others.”

“She was extremely well received,” Goldfarb said, noting that Palin was interrupted by applause twice.

AIPAC also praised the meeting.

” We had a good, productive discussion on the importance of the U.S.-Israel relationship, and we were pleased that Gov. Palin expressed her deep, personal and lifelong commitment to the safety and well-being of Israel,” the group’s spokesman, Josh Block, said in a statement.

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff was sentenced to four years in federal prison Thursday for his corrupt lobbying activities, which led to the downfall of a congressman and several other Washington officials.

Choking back tears, Abramoff delivered a highly emotional plea for the judge to exercise leniency, but readily admitted he had become corrupt.

"I stand before you a broken man," he said during the two-hour sentencing hearing. "I am not the same man who happily and arrogantly engaged in a lifestyle of political and business corruption," he said.

The once-powerful Abramoff appeared a meek figure, wearing a brown jail-issued T-shirt and speaking with his head slightly bowed.

A transsexual social activist known for her work on behalf of prostitutes and others living in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside is preparing a human rights complaint against the city's governing party after it rejected her as a parks board candidate.

Jamie Lee Hamilton said interviews with two board members of the Non-Partisan Association party about being a candidate in November's municipal elections focused on her sex life.

Hamilton said the interviews made her very uncomfortable.

"I felt that my whole lifestyle was being interrogated … that I was somehow immoral," she said.

Hamilton said the board members invited her to a café to discuss an ad she had placed on ShemaleCanada.com, an online meeting place for transsexuals.

As always in the Alliance, every time an election comes around, we aren't looking for ways to influence the election or help one candidate get elected over another. Remember that mass democracy flies in the face of the Alliance's principle that says that the masses of the people lack the ability to make decisions for the good of the larger group. Even if they could make such hard decisions, the masses lack the toughness and willpower to follow those decisions through to the end. For us, the masses are a necessary and stabilizing force in society; unfortunately, in a day and age when our race is in need of drastic changes rather than stability, the masses tend to stay put when we want to move.

So the masses have a lot of inertia. And while the bad news is that when the masses are staying put, it is very difficult to get them moving, the flip side of the coin is that once they begin moving, they tend to keep moving. In other words, if we could somehow get the White masses moving in our direction, we might be able to put into effect some changes throughout society that the Jews would be none too happy about and that would set us on our way to a new White nation.

I'm not going to suggest what those changes might be. To start thinking about those things before the masses start to grind out of the ruts of multiracialism in which they are now mired is to put the cart before the horse. But what I would like to suggest here is that the 2008 Presidential campaign and the election itself offer Our Cause a chance to grow and flourish.

WASHINGTON - Pushing back against an increasingly aggressive Moscow, President Bush said Wednesday the U.S. will send an extra $1 billion to Georgia to help the pro-Western former Soviet republic in the wake of Russia's invasion.

"Georgia has a strong economic foundation and leaders with an impressive record of reform," Bush said in a statement. "Our additional economic assistance will help the people of Georgia recover from the assault on their country, and continue to build a prosperous and competitive economy."

Vice President Dick Cheney, due in Georgia on Thursday, planned to make the massive aid package a major highlight of his discussions with Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili. Cheney is on a tour of three former Soviet republics that are wary of Russia's intentions in what Moscow likes to call its "near abroad" sphere of influence and what Cheney termed while in Azerbaijan on Wednesday "the shadow of the Russian invasion of Georgia."

"The free world cannot allow the destiny of a small independent country to be determined by the aggression of a larger neighbor," Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice told reporters at the State Department in a simultaneous announcement with Bush.

She mocked Russia for its recognition of the two separatist regions in Georgia that are at the heart of the conflict that broke out last month, and for its failure to garner international backing.

"Almost no one followed suit, I might note. It isn't really an impressive list to have Abkhazia and South Ossetia recognize each other," she said.

While Barack Obama has struggled to capture the Jewish vote, it turns out that one of his wife’s cousins is the country’s most prominent black rabbi — a fact that has gone largely unnoticed.

Michelle Obama, wife of the Democratic presidential nominee, and Rabbi Capers Funnye, spiritual leader of a mostly black synagogue on Chicago’s South Side, are first cousins once removed. Funnye’s mother, Verdelle Robinson Funnye (born Verdelle Robinson) and Michelle Obama’s paternal grandfather, Frasier Robinson Jr., were brother and sister.

Funnye (pronounced fuh-NAY) is chief rabbi at the Beth Shalom B’nai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregation in southwest Chicago. He is well-known in Jewish circles for acting as a bridge between mainstream Jewry and the much smaller, and largely separate, world of black Jewish congregations, sometimes known as black Hebrews or Israelites. He has often urged the larger Jewish community to be more accepting of Jews who are not white.

Little about the Frozen North is Jewish outside the realm of fiction (see Mordechai Richler, Michael Chabon, “Northern Exposure”), so when Republicans pitch Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, John McCain’s vice presidential pick, to the Jews and Democrats try to undermine her, both sides tend to reach.

Picking through the trivia and smears for substance, there’s this: Palin, 44, has genuinely warm relations with her Jewish constituents -- 6,000 or so -- and appears to have a fondness for Israel. She also comes down on the strongly conservative side on social issues where Jews tend to trend liberal.

“Governor Palin has established a great relationship with the Jewish community over the years and has attended several of our Jewish cultural gala events,” Rabbi Yosef Greenberg, the director of Chabad-Lubavitch in Anchorage, wrote in an e-mail after McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee and longtime Arizona senator, announced that she was joining his ticket.

Police are being called upon to drop their ethnic descriptions of alleged criminals when searching for individuals in New South Wales.

It is standard practice for police to use the words "of Middle Eastern appearance" when describing an alleged criminal of specific ethnicity.

However the Forum of Islamic Relations wants the term dropped because of it's potential racist bent.

"Middele Eastern can cover so many different nationalities, I mean Greek people or Pacific Islanders," Kuranda Seyit said.

"And it doesn't do any good for catching the criminal. It just sends a very strong message out there that the criminal that they're looking for is a Middle Easterner, and from there people's imaginations go wild."

Mr Seyit says it continues to stereotype and damage the relations of many young people from Middle Eastern backgrounds.

Democratic Congressman Robert Wexler of Florida lashed out Saturday at John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate, accusing her of supporting "Nazi sympathizer" Pat Buchanan, and branding the move an "affront to all Jewish Americans."

"John McCain's decision to select a vice presidential running mate that endorsed Pat Buchanan for president in 2000 is a direct affront to all Jewish Americans," said a statement by Wexler.

"Pat Buchanan is a Nazi sympathizer with a uniquely atrocious record on Israel, even going as far as to denounce bringing former Nazi soldiers to justice and praising Adolf Hitler for his 'great courage'".

Wexler went on to accuse McCain of having "failed his first test of leadership."

"At a time when standing up for Israel's right to self-defense has never been more critical, John McCain has failed his first test of leadership and judgment by selecting a running mate who has aligned herself with a leading anti-Israel voice in American politics. It is frightening that John McCain would select someone one heartbeat away from the presidency who supported a man who embodies vitriolic anti-Israel sentiments."

VANCOUVER - A posh golf course in B.C.'s Lower Mainland is denying membership to non-English-speaking players, similar to a controversial plan by the LPGA.

The private Vancouver Golf Club, which opened nearly 100 years ago in Coquitlam, B.C., rejects potential members who don't speak English.

The club's general manager, Brent Gough, has said the policy is designed to ensure all members are able to communicate and understand the club's rules.

Gough stopped taking calls on the issue Friday, but he told CBC that the policy was introduced a few years ago after prospective members - in particular East Asian immigrants - started applying with the help of translators.

"We ask them to go away and take language courses and reapply," he said.

Earlier in the week, news surfaced that the LPGA Tour plans to implement a policy that would suspend players who aren't fluent in English.

The LPGA policy, which will sanction women golfers for not speaking English in pro-ams, trophy presentations and media interviews, faced immediate criticism, including from male golfers who aren't subject to the same rules.

SACRAMENTO (AP) ¯ Colusa County officials are defending their display at the California State Fair after a black couple complained that a caricature of a smiling watermelon seed was racist.

The "Waldo Watermelon Seed" drawing was removed this week after the couple said the image evoked negative stereotypes about blacks.

The exhibit was intended to celebrate Colusa County's seed-producing crops, which generate $30 million a year.

Margaret Kemp-Williams, deputy counsel for Colusa County, says it was drawn by wards at a county juvenile hall where the population is roughly 40 percent black and 40 percent Hispanic.

The wards created a display honoring watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin and tomato seeds. Kemp-Williams says each seed was depicted true to its real color.

Veronica Hannon Thrasher and her husband objected to the "Waldo Watermelon" caricature, which they said looked like "a happy black slave eating watermelon."

A prominent Philadelphia attorney and Hillary Clinton supporter filed suit this afternoon in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania against Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission. The action seeks an injunction preventing the senator from continuing his candidacy and a court order enjoining the DNC from nominating him next week, all on grounds that Sen. Obama is constitutionally ineligible to run for and hold the office of President of the United States.

Philip Berg, the filing attorney, is a former gubernatorial and senatorial candidate, former chair of the Democratic Party in Montgomery (PA) County, former member of the Democratic State Committee, and former Deputy Attorney General of Pennsylvania. According to Berg, he filed the suit--just days before the DNC is to hold its nominating convention in Denver--for the health of the Democratic Party.

"I filed this action at this time," Berg stated, "to avoid the obvious problems that will occur when the Republican Party raises these issues after Obama is nominated.".

Berg cited a number of unanswered questions regarding the Illinois senator's background, and in today's lawsuit maintained that Sen. Obama is not a natural born U.S. citizen or that, if he ever was, he lost his citizenship when he was adopted in Indonesia. Berg also cites what he calls "dual loyalties" due to his citizenship and ties with Kenya and Indonesia.

Even if Sen. Obama can prove his U.S. citizenship, Berg stated, citing the senator's use of a birth certificate from the state of Hawaii verified as a forgery by three independent document forensic experts, the issue of "multi-citizenship with responsibilities owed to and allegiance to other countries" remains on the table.

In the lawsuit, Berg states that Sen. Obama was born in Kenya, and not in Hawaii as the senator maintains. Before giving birth, according to the lawsuit, Obama's mother traveled to Kenya with his father but was prevented from flying back to Hawaii because of the late stage of her pregnancy, "apparently a normal restriction to avoid births during a flight." As Sen. Obama's own paternal grandmother, half-brother and half-sister have also claimed, Berg maintains that Stanley Ann Dunham--Obama's mother--gave birth to little Barack in Kenya and subsequently flew to Hawaii to register the birth.

Berg cites inconsistent accounts of Sen. Obama's birth, including reports that he was born at two separate hospitals--Kapiolani Hospital and Queens Hospital--in Honolulu, as well a profound lack of birthing records for Stanley Ann Dunham, though simple "registry of birth" records for Barack Obama are available in a Hawaiian public records office.

The European Parliament has passed a controversial set of EU rules for dealing with illegal immigration.

Under the new rules illegal immigrants can be detained for up to 18 months and face a five-year re-entry ban.

Lawmakers backed the measures by a large majority despite opposition from many Socialist and Green parties, and condemnation from human rights groups.

The rules took more than two years to draft and member states will have a further two years to implement them.

An analysis of new census figures has shown that Australia is suffering from an unprecedented "man drought".

The statistics have revealed that there are almost 100,000 more females than males in Australia.

The problem is worse in the coastal cities, where women have moved seeking better jobs and lifestyles, while many men have gone overseas.

Thirty years ago Australia was with flush with men thanks to immigration policies that favoured males.

That position has been reversed because thousands of Australian men in their 20s and early 30s have gone overseas either to travel or to work.

It has caused a gender imbalance that is having far-reaching implications.

On Fox News Sunday this morning, Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said that President Bush is more likely to attack Iran if he believes Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) is going to be elected.

However, “if the president thought John McCain was going to be the next president, he would think it more appropriate to let the next president make that decision than do it on his way out,” Kristol said, reinforcing the fact that McCain is offering a third Bush term on Iran.

"The goal of the organization is to have a competent and professional group of armed volunteers ready to respond to a threat at a moment's notice in any area where Jews reside," explains the Israeli combat veteran.

Kitat Konenut New York is modeled on the rapid response teams in the West Bank settlements that are often the first to act when terrorist attacks or other emergencies take place. The group bills itself as religious-Zionist but nonpolitical.

American Jews have "felt a false sense of security in the United States," Stern believes, "because historically there has been less anti-Semitism than in other countries. But there have been incidents - neo-Nazi terrorist attacks, Arab terrorist attacks. Jews have to be vigilant."

FEWER than two-thirds of babies born in the UK are registered as white British, figures revealed yesterday.

The first Government breakdown of births by ethnicity shows how Britain is evolving.

Just 64.4 per cent of the 649,371 tots born in 2005 were white British.

Nearly nine per cent were Asian, including Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi.

Five per cent were black or black British.

Chinese kiddies formed 0.4 per cent, 3.5 per cent were mixed race and 2.4 per cent were from other ethnic groups.

Around 0.3 per cent were Irish while 4.8 per cent were of other white background, with ten per cent’s ethnicity not stated.

The Office for National Statistics figures also revealed significant differences in age and marital status of mothers from different ethnic groups.

As many as 71 African migrants drowned after their boat sank in the Mediterranean Sea, eight of their companions have told Maltese police.

The survivors were rescued by a fishing vessel from a semi-submerged dinghy about 70km (40 miles) off Malta, then handed over to a Maltese military boat.

The ship and a military aircraft searched the area for other survivors but none were found, the police said.

Malta - the smallest EU member state - is a leading destination for migrants.

More than 1,000 have managed to reach the island so far this year, mainly from North Africa. On Sunday, more than 100 were brought ashore in two separate operations off the Maltese coast.

Quebec provincial police are denying they were chased out of Kanesatake Mohawk territory after their cruiser was rammed by a truck just after midnight Friday.

There were reports that two police cars were damaged, and that the police were chased and run off the road at Oka, Que., scene of a major standoff between Mohawks and police supported by Canadian Forces in 1990.

But Sûreté du Québec spokesman Michel Brunet denies they were chased out of the territory.

"Some things like this happen every week somewhere else in Quebec. I mean, we are hit by some cars sometimes, by trucks sometimes. It's not the first time, and I know this will happen again," Brunet said.

He said the confrontation might have been sparked when police arrested three young Mohawk men earlier Friday. But, he said, relations between police and local residents are good.

Following the confrontation, more than a dozen Mohawks barricaded Highway 344 near Oka.

They dragged trees onto the highway and barricaded at least two other entrances to Kanesatake.

Police spokesman Gregory Gomez del Prado said protesters also set fire to a tree trunk on the road.

Two missionaries from Vernon, B.C., who were brutally attacked in Kenya earlier this month arrived back in Canada on Monday night.

John Bergen, 70, and his wife Eloise, 65, were met by about a dozen family members and supporters after their plane touched down in Calgary.

Wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the word "Believe" on the front, many were in tears or cried out as the Bergens were brought off their flight in wheelchairs.

"I'm alive, I'm alive," said John Bergen, looking frail and with his left arm still bound in a sling.

"We're great; we're alive. We're a little bit torn at the edges, but we're great," he said.

Eloise Bergen told reporters that she was just learning to smile again through her damaged mouth, which she said was still frozen. She said it was "awesome" to see her family.

"I'm smiling big inside, and I'm so happy to be home. So happy," she said. "Thank you, everybody, for praying for us."

TORONTO - Abortion rights activist Dr. Henry Morgentaler said Wednesday he's honoured to receive the Order of Canada and that the country has set an example for other countries to emulate.

Morgentaler, best known for taking the issue of abortion rights to the Supreme Court and striking down the country's abortion laws in 1988, said he feels that "finally now, the government recognizes my contribution to Canadian women."

"I hope that Canada has set an example and that internationally people and governments will respond to it," Morgentaler, 85, said at a media conference at his clinic.

Morgentaler said abortions are safer and more accessible thanks to his efforts and he believes he deserves the award.

"Now, in this country... abortion has become one of the safest surgical techniques," he said.

"The safety and health of women has been preserved and I'm very proud of that."

Abortion rights groups applauded the decision, announced Tuesday, saying Morgentaler put his life and liberty on the line to advance women's rights.

Opponents of abortion say the Order of Canada should unite Canadians and not divide them.
